Vitamin D: 7 reasons to get it from diet vs. sun exposure

Recently the American Academy of Dermatology released an article with tons of research supporting the benefits of Vitamin D being received from the diet, instead of sun exposure. Below we have a the quick-read list.

Take a peek and think about how you are getting Vitamin D. Remember: our bodies need it to have healthy bones, as our bodies can’t process the minerals calcium or phosphorus without it!

  1. More than 2 million people are diagnosed in the United States annually with over 3.5 million skin cancers.
  2. UV rays can cause premature aging of the skin and skin cancer, as no amount of ultraviolet exposure for Vitamin D comes without added risk for skin cancer.
  3. Skin cancer diagnosis keeps increased – estimated one out of five Americans will have skin cancer in their lifetime.
  4. One person dies from melanoma every hour.
  5. Dietary sources of vitamin D do not prematurely age the skin or increase the risk of developing skin cancer. (You know how we at Glow Med Spa feel about premature aging of the skin… thumbs down. Quick reminder to wear sunscreen every day!)
  6. Vitamin D increased the body’s absorption of calcium 30 to 40 percent, and phosphorus by 80 percent. Fortified foods and beverages are rich in both vitamin D and calcium and maintain phosphate levels. Many dietary supplements also contain both of these minerals.
  7. Vitamin D must be processed by the liver and kidneys to be used by the body. The usable form of vitamin D created by this process is the same, regardless of how it enters the body. And diet has zero skin cancer factors.
